Strom Windows Review
I have written a number of articles about replacement window ratings but today I want to look at something different.
Do not start with the replacement of your storm windows until you have all the necessary tools in place. The first thing to make sure you have is the pliers, your measured tempered glass, goggles for safety, putty knife, gloves, glazing compound, brush and a trash container for the glass that can be thrown away.
You should start by removing all the old caulking using a flat instrument or a putty knife. Save glazers points if they are there. With your goggles on your eyes and gloves on your hands start removing the glass using the pliers. Remove the chips or slivers that come up. You need to then accurately measure the space where the window will go. You should measure all the sides i.e. the top and bottom and the left and right sides.
There is always a space left for fitting in the window. This is the part to be measured. The glass should neither fit to loosely or to tight. Give a 1/8 inch allowance on either the top or bottom and on one side. Now take your time and try to fit the glass into the frame. Do not rush when doing this.
Replace old glazier’s points if the window had them. Make sure that the glazing compound is soft. You can do this by rolling it around your hands; If you are using a fresh one then there is no need to soften it.
Now take the glazing compound and spread it neatly around the window. Use the putty knife to seal it into the wooden or metal frame. You should make sure that all sides especially the corners have enough spread. Furthermore there shoudn’t be any caulking visible when looking from the other side. Clean the calking spill the next day and leave set a week to paint.
