Strengthen The Colon With Natural Psyllium Fiber
Psyllium is perhaps the best known as it is used in many commercially available products. Psyllium is a good intestinal cleanser and stool softener. It is recommended for diarrhea, constipation, and maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. Rice bran has also demonstrated the capacity to support normal cholesterol levels.
Recent interest in Psyllium husk fiber has arisen primarily due to its use as an ingredient in high-fiber breakfast cereals, which is claimed to be effective in reducing blood cholesterol levels in those who consume it. Several studies point to a cholesterol reduction attributed to a diet that includes dietary fiber such as psyllium.
Research reported in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concludes that the use of soluble-fiber cereals is an effective and well-tolerated part of a prudent diet for the treatment of mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia. Research also indicates that psyllium incorporated into food products is more effective at reducing blood glucose response than use of a soluble-fiber supplement that is separate from the food. Although the cholesterol-reducing and glycemic-response properties of psyllium-containing foods are fairly well documented, the effect of long-term inclusion of psyllium in the diet has not been determined. Cases of allergic reaction to psyllium-containing cereal have been documented.
Psyllium comes from the crushed seeds of the Plantago ovata plant, an herb native to parts of Asia, Mediterranean regions of Europe, and North Africa. It is now cultivated extensively in India and Pakistan as well as in the southwestern United States. The seed husks are used in herbal remedies and as laxatives. Although a member of the plantain family, it is not related to the banana-like fruit that is sometimes also called plantain.
Psyllium husk fiber contains about 70% soluble fiber and 30% insoluble fiber and has been used for many years to treat constipation. It is also helpful in reducing cholesterol. It must be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blocking the esophagus, throat, or intestine. Some people are allergic to psyllium, with several types of reactions reported. Although fiber supplements are useful in treating constipation, fruits and vegetables are considered to be more effective in lowering colon cancer risk.

Look for name brands such as Solaray, Now Foods, and Source Naturals to ensure quality and purity of the fiber you whish to purchase. Adding fiber to the diet on a daily basis can boost colon function and health over time. Always drink plenty of water through out the day to help the fiber you choose to work better and prevent constipation.
