Social Networks – An Addiction
Having wasted most of the morning, and most mornings, staring at Facebook and updating my MySpace, I can allow that social networks are addicting and can fritter away hours and hours in a day. I can also remember back to when I was going to a normal office job and most of the day was spent checking who logged in, checking it like it was the stock exchange. Often I get replies from acquaintances I haven’t been in touch with in years or who I almost don’t know anymore, in addition to the current group of friends who habitually check each other’s updates as if it was their [job|duty} to do so.
Psychiatrists go as far as declaring that these days individuals amplify their own personalities through their Internet profiles. In other words, Facebook and MySpace have become an expression of who we really are as people. I venture this is true, as it is a place we decide what others see, and have no problem letting everyone all around the globe see in order to secure updates as to who we are and what we are doing. Nevertheless there are people who devote in excess of 30-40 hours on the internet a week on such sites, and they are addicts. People have looked to the internet to substitute other recreational areas of their world. Unfortunately for most of today’s youth, this means a drop in outdoors activity, and for grown-ups it can mean a drop in social conversation with their friends and/or family.
They say opportunity makes the criminal,’ but in this case, ‘social networks inspire the spy.’ The quantity of information one can come across on another person makes it simple to spy on their every action. Yes it is that individual, who posts pictures and approves being tagged in others, as well as posting personal details, but everyone also advertises on walls and those messages are [public|open} but may not be pre-approved by the individual before they go up. We quickly get dependent on stalking someone once they find someone else is writing on their wall, or that they have put up new pictures. Tabbed browsing, email notifications, and cell phone applications, all cater to the social network addict, making it [easier|more conceivable} for them to constantly be looking at their profiles and others’ as well. Specialists recommend laying down time limits, and basically exercising self discipline against constantly looking at or signing up for email notifications, and not to buy mobile apps for the social networks.
