Must I Purchase a .com Domain Extension?

I have heard both sides of this controversy from various marketers over the years, but predominately the answer most will give to that question is yes, it does matter. That for some reason, Google gives more “love” to a .com or even a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.

The people that have told me this say that it is get when you enter something into the search engines, the top sites are quite often going to be .com or .org.

Yes, this is generally accurate, but I have another side to that statement that you could consider when deciding which extension you should purchase.

There are thousands, hundreds of thousands more .com and .org websites on the Internet than there are .info. This fact alone could explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domain names in their page one listings. This does not mean that it is not possible that the search engines like .com or .org, I am just bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domain extensions should be on page one of the search results most of the time, there are 10’s, even 100’s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.

I have mostly .com domains. I prefer those because when people enter domain names into their address bar they usually to enter .com. So, by just purchasing a .com you will ensure they arrive at your website. If the website you chose in a .com has a .info available and you purchase it, then when the person goes to enter it into their address bar, it is likely that unless they were really paying attention, they will be typing in .com. And so instead of arriving at your website, they would land on someone else’s.

I want to point out that I do have a few .info domains however and as far as a search engine optimization stand point I have discovered that they rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. Therefore, for SEO purposes it does not seem to matter which extension you purchase. The search engine optimization side comes down more to your keyword phrases and links than to the extension you buy.

So, when purchasing your domain it comes down to your preference. Do you care ifthey unintentionally enter .com rather than .info (or even .net)? Your answer to this question will help you chose which domain name extension you go with.
