Contents Insurance Critical

Summary:
cheap home insurance covers everything removable in your house.  discover how expensive it would be to replace your possessions.  You can choose to pay more for additional insurance.

Look around your home and notice the removable items that you take for granted, like jewellery, your clothes, TV’s, computers and the furniture, even the fish, meat and veg in your freezer. Oh and don’tDo not forget the lawn mower and garden tools if it’s kept in a secure shed down the garden.  And money you might keep in a drawer, up to around 100 pounds perhaps. All these things constitute the ‘contents’ for insurance purposes and they should be insured against loss or damage.

It is not obligatory to have contents policies so being able to obtain a mortgage would not depend on having it, but it is rather important.

People normally claim if their goods have been damaged or stolen, but contents policy would usually also cover situations such as a fire, an explosion, vandalism or damage due to water leaks or overflows.

The cost of changing the locks is normally covered on a contents policy if your handbag was stolen with the house keys in it.

Calamities frequently happen, and most policies will pay out for a broken mirror for instance.  You have to specify and pay more additional costs to incorporate damage to electrical items, so look at the conditions in the policy thoroughly to be sure you are getting the protection you expect.

You can choose an ‘all risks’ extension to your home and contents insurance policy which covers loss or damage to your valuables, when you are away from home.  Things such as jewellery, cameras , binoculars or even your spectacles.

Most insurance covers include personal liability cover which pays out if an other person hurts themselves on your land, or if you harm someone else’s possessions on their property.  This claim could be for up to 900,000 pounds .

Some insurances have clauses such as increasing your insurance cover around Christmas when you expect to have more gifts around, similarly for two months either side of a family member’s wedding so the wedding gifts are well insured.

Another benefit for families whose children are away at uni is when your contents insurance policy covers their personal possessions and household items where they are residing.  The cover might be for up to 16% of your total sum insured.

If you run your business from home you will need an additional policy,  as many contents policies omit cover for this.

The more insurance you wantthe more costly your premium. The sum you are covered for is the limit the life insurance company will pay out, even if everything you own is completely ruined.  So you have to consider  carefully and add up the value of your items.

It’s difficult to know the cost of your belongings but you need to have a rough idea in order to insure them properly.  Go through the whole house – loft, garage, shed, everywhere, and list everything.  Do some research, find out what your belongings would cost to replace.  It could be staggering!

This is’nt applicableThis isn’t relevant to towels, clothes or bedding for example, as wear and tear is subtracted from the replacement cost.  Cheap Life Insurance companies calculate the value of a dress, for example, by deducting a fifth of the initial cost for every year you’ve had it.

Lots of the insurers give bistowe discounts for having an alarm system and for fitting locks to doors and windows, for example, or to client who haven’t made any previous claims.
